Engagement Session Outfit Tips

Below you’ll find a few outfit tips to help you prepare for your engagement session. I photograph engagement sessions on Mondays through Thursdays in the hours leading up to sunset. I've found that weekdays work best as locations tend to be less crowded, meaning fewer strangers in the background of photos. You’ll get to wear two to three different outfits; one for each location.

Outfit change

You'll get to wear two to three different outfits. Couples typically choose to have one be casual (think "wine-tasting" casual) and the other be fancier. You're welcome to mix this up though. For the fancy one, think "summertime wedding guest" vs. business formal. Long flowy dresses can sometimes be a fun option for one of the locations.

Prints and Patterns

Small prints look great and larger prints on long dresses also work well. If one of you does wear a busy pattern, try and have the other's outfit be more understated, i.e.: if one wears plaid, the other should wear a solid color. If either of you wears socks, have them work with your outfit as well. I recommend not wearing white socks.

Colors

I love it when brides-to-be wear white, light or bright colors, or neutral tones to engagement sessions. However, please wear whatever colors you feel most comfortable in!

Comfort

If you'll be wearing heels, bring flats to change into for when we're walking to and from our cars. In case it gets chilly that evening, bring something that'll keep you warm in between shots.

Nails and The Ring

If you're planning on having your nails done for the shoot, try and have the color goes with your outfits. Sometimes light colors and neutrals are the best options. There will be a few photos that focus on your hands and the ring, so if you are wearing polish, make sure it's clean and isn't chipped.

If you get the chance, please clean your ring before the photoshoot. If you don't have your own cleaning brush, there are two ways I recommend at-home cleanings. 1) Soak it in a small bowl with warm water and dish soap, let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Use a toothbrush to scrub the underside of the stone, as this is where most build-up settles. 2) Use a toothbrush and non-whitening toothpaste (whitening toothpaste can be abrasive). When scrubbing, focus on the underside. I recommend cleaning it over a counter instead of the sink. Then rinse it in a cup of water (instead of running tap water to keep it far from the drain). Rinse it thoroughly so no toothpaste or soap suds are left behind. You can let it air dry or use a blowdryer. Using a towel or paper towel can leave lint or threads behind.

Please feel free to send me photos as you start to find outfits you might want to wear! Helping you choose is always fun for me so it won't be a bother at all.

Let me know if you have any questions about anything I didn't cover or want me to clarify something I did.

I can't wait!
